actually in between typing out the post subject and creating this post i've decided to just do a ranked list of every official arc v ship name instead. this is an extremely long post but it is approximately 80% objective, i tried not to let my feelings about the actual ships influence my rankings too much. creating yugioh ship names is a very delicate art that requires a perfect balance between clear meaning and appealing sound... the ship name needs to capture the essence of that ship in a single word that can't be easily confused with another ship so it's difficult to do well but when it's done right it's sooo cool. yugioh truly has my favourite ship naming system ever, not even khr/gw number smashes can compare <3

COMPROMISESHIPPING

compromiseshipping (reiji/serena/shun) - well i came up with it and i'm me so what am i supposed to do NOT give myself a pat on the back for my genius. read my manifesto

COOL AND/OR EPIC SOUNDING

genesishipping (ray/zarc) - they were the beginning of all things... the origin of the four dimensions... the originals of the bracelet girls and the yu4 respectively... Genesis.
hostageshipping (reiji/shun) - shun attempted to take reiji hostage in order to ransom him for his sister ruri, but he ended up essentially becoming reiji's hostage instead. and by choice lmfaoooooooooo
obsidianshipping (masumi/shun) - masumi has a gem themed deck, and shun's last name in the dub is obsidian. perfect coincidence
oceanshipping (kaito/ruri) - kaito + ruri = kairi = ocean. okay this one is a biased placement i just really like ocean motifs even though the actual ship doesn't have any
peregrineshipping (serena/shun) - peregrine falcons for shun's falcon monsters and name, and they are associated with celestial powers like the moon for serena's lunalights
prodigyshipping (reiji/serena) - come on!!!!! the coolest ship name ever!!!! since they are both duel prodigies <333333
reclaimshipping (ruri/shun) - shun is trying to rescue ruri and they are both trying to reclaim their homeland from the academia invasion and this is a really nice name, To Me
serenadeshipping (serena/yuzu) - has serena's name in it, and a serenade is a type of song for yuzu's music deck. also isn't serenade just such a lovely word

CLEVER

appleshipping (rin/yugo) - rin + yugo = ringo = apple which i think is cute just like they are
beamshipping (ray/yuya) - beam as in smiling brightly (yuya's I WILL MAKE EVERYONE SMILE~~ philosophy) and beam as in a ray of light. since her name is ray. ha ha ha ha ha
blackbirdshipping (crow/shun) - they both use bird themed decks, shun has the kanji for black in his name, and crow's deck archetype is blackfeather. also his name is crow. motif mashing names need to be working on at least this many levels for me to find them clever
chantshipping (mieru/yuzu) - chant evokes rituals/magic which is mieru's thing, and neatly ties into yuzu's music theme
classicalshipping (reiji/yuzu) - yuzu's ace monsters are based on classical musicians and reiji's ace monsters are based on classical (as in historical) conquerors. i actually like this one i think it captures their Essence pretty well... reiji has the vibe of a guy who listens to classical music too so it makes sense to me and i'm elevating it out of the main motifs mashed together tiers
crescentshipping (reira/tsukikage) - tsukikage's name has 'moon' in it and a crescent moon is shaped like a 'c' just like reira's ccc deck archetype. this is just stupid enough to loop back around to smart, to me
divineshipping (stargazer magician/timegazer magician) - they are both themed around methods of divination, and also as monsters are associated with like magic/divine/etc so the name is fitting
horagaishipping (gongenzaka/yuzu) - a horagai is a traditional jpn musical instrument which fits yuzu's music theme and gongenzaka's traditional theme, plus gongenzaka has a specific tuner monster called horaga-e which just elevates this into clever tier
janushipping (dennis/ruri) - dennis our resident double agent who specifically befriended and then betrayed ruri, for the two-faced aspect of janus. also janus as the god of beginnings represents how dennis greenlit academia's invasion of xyz after meeting ruri
joikshipping (olga/yuzu) - like horagaishipping, a joik is a type of sami song and olga is from norway, and is said to have been given to the people by fairies, like yuzu's melodious deck type
lilyshipping (gloria/yuri) - toxic lilies have the genus name 'gloriosa' and yuri has a plant themed deck, plus there's death/rebirth symbolism that suits academia soldiers
mockingbirdshipping (dennis/shun) - bird for shun's bird deck, mocking for the way they trashtalk each other's xyz summons, and mockingbird for dennis's mimicry of Not Being Evil and shun's aggressive protection of his family. this one fits, To Me
predatorshipping (serena/yuri) - both their decks have predators in them (serena's big cats, yuri's carnivorous plants & predaplant archetype), plus they're the yu4/bracelet girl matchup from fusion dimension which is focused on hunting down xyz
refractionshipping (masumi/ray) - masumi has a gem themed deck and ray like a ray of light hence light through something like a diamond = refraction
sparrowshipping (shun/yuya) - shun has a bird deck and yuya has the kanji for arrow in his name so like... spARROW hahahahaha
swiftshipping (rin/ruri) - swifts are a type of small bird like ruri's monsters, and swift also means fast like rin's speed duels. also swifts are associated with joining together for protection, as they had to do as prisoners in academia
tuneshipping (rin/yuzu) - i love this name sooo much. tune for yuzu's musical monsters and tune as in the process of synchro summoning, since rin is a synchro duellist. you could stretch this and be like well since rin is a mechanic she also TUNES up machines

MAKES SENSE I GUESS

aceshipping (hokuto/masumi/yaiba) - they are the top students in lds
announcershipping (nico/melissa) - they are both announcers
apparitionshipping (shun/yuto/yuya) - yuto was emotionally spirit vored by yuya and basically possessed yuya in order to speak to shun so he's like a ghost. not putting this under 'the what??' only because it was named before yuya absorbed all of his counterparts as well as yuto, so it was specific enough at the time
collisionshipping (yuto/yugo) - yugo tried to run yuto over with his motorcycle a few times. honestly i just think it's funny so i'm putting it in this tier
cookshipping (michio/yoko) - because they both like to cook. i'm excusing this one because i think they are in fact the only characters associated with cooking
counterpartshipping (yuto/yuya) - yuto and yuya are alternate dimension counterparts of each other. again named before the rest of the counterparts appeared so it was specific enough at the time and isn't bad enough to warrant a 'the what??' ranking
daddyshipping (leo/yusho) - they are dads. and specifically the two most plot important dads in the show (sorry shuzo)
dartshipping (shingo/yuya) - shingo threw darts at yuya's face when they met. i don't think darts came up again in the show so this one is ok
dimensionshipping (yugo/yuri/yuto/yuya) - they are alternate dimension counterparts of each other and in fact caused the dimensions to split in the first place
entertainmentshipping (dennis/yuya) - they have complementary entertainment-themed deck archetypes, entermate and entermage (performapal and performage in the dub). def also the two most entertainer style characters of the show so it's like [nodding]
epochshipping (gongenzaka/mieru) - gongenzaka is all about tradition/the past and mieru as a fortuneteller is all about the future
exchangeshipping (dennis/halil/olga) - they are exchange students
fatedshipping (mieru/yuya) - mieru says they are fated to be together
finalistshipping (reira/tatsuya) - they were finalists in the s1 duel tournament
flightshipping (clear wing/dark rebellion/odd eyes/starve venom) - they are the four main dragons who all fly. respect that even the dragons got a ship name
foolshipping (mieru/shingo) - shingo is a fool and The Fool is a tarot card related to mieru's divination. again i just think this is very funny
fruitshipping (yuya/yuzu) - yuzu is named after a fruit and yuya's hair looks like a tomato
frypanshipping (crow/shingo) - their Main Interaction was when shingo threw a frying pan at a guard to save crow. giving it a pass from The What tier because i feel like that was the only frypan related moment in the show
glowshipping (yuzu/yugo/yuri/yuto/yuya) - yuzu's bracelet glows whenever any two of the yu4 are near her
greekshipping (dennis/serena) - both their names are greek in origin
headmastershipping (himika/shuzo) - they are both headmasters

astrologyshipping (hokuto/mieru) - hokuto has a star themed deck and mieru is clairvoyant. i think this is a pretty cute ship name tbh it's just that like... talk about the randomest of het matchups
aurorashipping (rin/serena) - i'll be real i've read the explanation post like ten times and i still don't fully understand the reasoning for this one but i think... rin plays a wind witch deck, serena plays a lunalights deck, auroras are caused by solar winds and can uhhhh sometimes be seen at night? pretty big reach but it is a very nice name and a very nice ship
bardshipping (ruri/shingo) - ruri plays a lyrical luscinia deck and shingo plays theatre troupe themed decks so if you smash them together you get a bard
canaryshipping (crow/yuzu) - crow has a bird themed deck and yuzu's deck archetype is melodious. and canaries are songbirds. tbh i'm not sold on how canary would exclude the other bird themed characters (shun, ruri) but it's a nice name
facetshipping (masumi/yaiba) - yaiba has a blade themed deck and masumi has a gem themed deck so combining these creates facets
hummingbirdshipping (shun/sayaka) - birds for shun and hummingbirds are small and pretty like fairies for sayaka
imperialcandyshipping (sora/yuri) - toeing the line of stupid but since imperial candy is a real thing and combines sora's love for sweets with yuri's love of uh... imperialism, and general princely aura, i am ranking it here
lightsabershipping (hokuto/yaiba) - yaiba has a sword themed deck and lightsabers are from star wars which relates to hokuto's star themed deck
lithomancyshipping (masumi/mieru) - masumi's rock/gem themed deck + mieru's divination themed deck
lunomancyshipping (mieru/serena) - mieru's divination themed deck + serena's moon themed deck
lyrashipping (hokuto/yuzu) - lyra is a constellation representing a lyre, for hokuto's star themed deck and yuzu's music themed deck
mochishipping (sora/serena) - mochi is a type of sweet for sora's sweet tooth, and one of serena's monsters lunalight white rabbit holds a mochi mallet
moonstoneshipping (masumi/serena) - masumi has a gem themed deck and serena has a moon themed deck and i like moonstones
musicboxshipping (sora/yuzu) - sora has a toy themed deck and yuzu has a music themed deck
mysticshipping (dennis/mieru) - dennis is a magician and mieru is a fortune teller

ornithomancyshipping (mieru/shun) - mieru's divination themed deck + shun's bird themed deck. istg people were just making up random mieru ships to make use of all the different types of magic
paradiseshipping (shun/yuri) - birds of paradise are both a type of bird (shun's deck) and plant (yuri's deck) also i think it's funny that both of them are like, the polar opposite of a paradise
parrotshipping (shingo/shun) - bird for shun's deck, and parrot for shingo's comic relief status and tendency to copy other people
pollinateshipping (shinji/yuzu) - shinji has a bee deck and yuzu has bloom/flower monsters and bees pollinate flowers. i'm ngl though this one makes me wince

THE WHAT?? (confusing)

alterationshipping (shinji/yugo) - shinji and yugo are both trying to "change their fate" as obviously this cannot be said for any other characters in yugioh arc v (an anime about changing your fate) and thus is very specific and also immediately what you think of when you see the word "alteration"
antiheroshipping (edo/kaito) - edo and kaito are both antihero type characters. and edo plays a destiny hero deck i guess? but it's not like they're the only antiheroes in the show so... i don't know
artemishipping (serena/yuri/yuya) - serena plays a lunalight deck (artemis is the goddess of the moon), yuri is the face of academia who treats duelling like a hunting game (artemis is the goddess of hunting) (but i mean any academia student would work here so i'm not convinced), and yuya's name has the kanji for 'arrow' in it (artemis uses a bow and arrow). personally i think it's hmmmmmmm brave to name a ship with two dudes in it after artemis
athenashipping (gloria/serena) - gloria and serena are both female soldiers of academia (athena is the goddess of war), and gloria uses an amazoness (female warrior) deck, and serena's deck is moon themed (athena's animal motif owls come out at night). this could honestly apply to any female academia student x serena and especially gloria's twin sister grace who has exactly the same deck as her so like... Lacks Specificity
birdcageshipping (crow/serena) - ok i understand that all the bird/night related names have been used up already bc too many people in this show have night and bird motifs but like... why birdcage....? bird for crow but the cage part bc serena's been locked up all her life? i mean... okay... just doesn't Evoke essence of crow/serena
blizzardshipping (rin/shun) - ??????? they are both "cold, harsh and intense" like a blizzard. except rin isn't like that at all wtf she was under the influence of brainwashing!!!
braceletshipping (yuto/yuzu) - this is a god tier ship. HOWEVER, we must be real with ourselves. there are FOUR characters with plot important bracelets in this show. yuto and yuzu deserve a more specific name that's special to THEM
candyshipping (sora/yuya) - their first duel was in a candy themed duel field. but the thing is that candy is sora's motif so this basically only evokes sora and not yuya
clearwingshipping (yugo/zarc) - yugo's ace monster clear wing synchro dragon used to belong to zarc...? clear wing is definitely like 100% associated with yugo and not zarc though so this one doesn't make much sense
connectshipping (yu4/bracelet girls i'm not typing eight names out) - They Are All Connected To Each Other
controlshipping (roger/yuya) - .......... roger wants to control yuya via brainwashing........... even though multiple people get brainwashed and pretty much all of s2-s3 is about control and power and whatever
counterchargeshipping (kaito/yuri) - they both use a lot of counterattacks in their duel strategies, and kaito wants revenge on yuri for destroying his homeland. this name just sounds ridiculous imo
covenantshipping (reiji/tsukikage) - they have a contract with each other lmaoo
crewshipping (kakimoto/ootomo/shingo/yamabe) - kakimoto/ootomo/yamabe are shingo's crew
defectshipping (edo/grace) - they both defected from academia. along with like 90% of the named characters from academia
divergentshipping (reiji/shun/yuya) - sxc ship, firstly. anyway the name is bc they have like, divergent methods of achieving the same goal, but this could be said of literally any two characters on the same side of the interdimensional war
dualityshipping (kaito/yuto) - they used to be from rival branches of heartland duel school and their ace monsters are galaxy-eyes PHOTON dragon and DARK rebellion xyz dragon, respectively. like okay this is more convincing than some of the other ones but it just is not enough to take the name
emblemshipping (serena/yuya) - they have similar emblems on their clothing as serena has stars on her academia uniform like every other academia student, and yuya has stars on his goggles. you would think that their name would then be something related to stars specifically but i guess hokuto took up all those words
escapeshipping (asuka/osiris red girl) - they escaped academia together. except many people escaped academia so it's not specific enough
fairyshipping (mikiyo/yuzu) - both of them heavily use fairy type monsters. but so does sayaka?
fairytaleshipping (mieru/mikiyo) - for mieru's prediction princess archetype and mikiyo's fairy monsters. i really think mikiyo's ship names should focus more on her being a duel idol rather than her fairy monsters because she isn't the only one with fairy monsters lol
fastenshipping (gongenzaka/rin) - gongenzaka's duel style is called steadFAST and rin is a mechanic who FASTENS things together probably. more importantly who the hell is shipping this
foresightshipping (reiji/mieru) - mieru can the future and reiji is Mr All According To Keikaku
ghostshipping (reiji/yuri) - yuri + reiji = yurei = ghost. now i know that i said appleshipping was clever tier for being the same thing but the ghost schtick is already reserved for yuto!!! get your own motif!!!
gourmetshipping (michio/shingo) - michio is a chef and shingo likes gourmet pies. i don't know
guardianshipping (crow/shinji) - they are guardians to the kids
guiltshipping (ruri/sayaka) - sayaka feels guilty about not being able to save ruri, along with every other named character from xyz
harpyshipping (grace/ruri) - harpies are from greek mythology like grace's amazoness monsters and are part bird like ruri's monsters. it's just that gloria also has amazoness monsters and crow and shun both have bird monsters, though ruri is the only girl with bird monsters i guess?
hospitalityshipping (halil/michio/olga) - in their singular interaction michio said he wanted to show halil and olga hospitality in their duel
jailbreakshipping (crow/yuya) - yuya tried to break crow out of jail. falls down because there was an entire mini arc about the cast breaking out of jail
jokershipping (shingo/sora/yuya) - they are all professional clowns. but i would think from the name that it involved dennis not sora
keepshipping (asuka/grace) - just too obscure and flimsy to be clever. grace's last name tyler refers to innkeeping, and asuka's english name alexis is about defending (keeping other people safe)
knightshipping (shingo/yuto) - yuto plays phantom knights and shingo calls him 'knight-kun' at one point
macaronshipping (michio/sora) - michio is a chef, sora likes sweets, macarons are sweet and food so well i guess
manipulateshipping (leo/roger) - they manipulate people
mechanicalshipping (reiji/rin) - rin is a mechanic and reiji is COLD LIKE A MACHINE. confusing because lots of other characters have mechanical themed monsters
moonblossomshipping (ruri/serena) - serena has a moon themed deck and ruri's surname kurosaki means black blossom. but you know who else has the same last name as ruri? SHUN. and you know who has flower themed monsters? YUZU. why not pick a name relevant to ruri's nightingale monsters like ? NIGHTINGALESHIPPING IS RIGHT THERE
nisshokushipping (hikage/sora) - nisshoku = solar eclipse, hikage has a sun motif, and sora killed him like an eclipse killed the sun. the gratuitous jpn is because eclipseshipping is already taken by malik/yami malik from the original yugioh, and maybe bc hikage is a ninja
oddeyeshipping (yuya/zarc) - exactly the same as clearwingshipping except yuya's ace is odd eyes pendulum dragon instead
owlshipping (dennis/gongenzaka/shun) - owls are birds for shun, connected to magic for dennis, and symbols of protection for gongenzaka. that is just too much of a reach i'm sorry
parfaitshipping (michio/olga) - michio is a chef and olga has an arctic themed deck. but i would assume this ship involved sora bc of the sweet aspect
