fave terror tennis songs

follow-up to the jokes compilation i just posted there will probably be more songs in this list because i love tennis terror saurrrr much. i think for me there needs to be something in the instrumentals/melody itself not just the lyrics that makes me experience tails_gets_trolled.png so for example <pain karamiau futatsu no story> is extremely terror inducing lyrics and context wise but i feel like the song itself is just like, a nice song. same with <mattetaze> definitely like top 5 most fucked up lyrics of all time and made me crazy yukibun shipper but the actual song is just a normal ballad. like i feel like there isn't anything in the instrumentals that makes me feel like *incomprehensible* if you know what i mean. and vice versa with <bring it on>, which has randomly the most tails_gets_trolled chorus melody line but the lyrics are just about being doubles married and trying your best at tennis, and <tegami>, which is a lovely song about the ocean that just sounds extremely heart touchingly sad for no discernible reason
also i was trying really hard not to... ship goggles terror so i left off songs like <for yourself> and <kokushoku no aura> which i feel like are not necessarily terror in and of themselves but because i associate them so heavily with snyk terror they have become extremely terror to me. this intro is getting long af but i also want to say i almost included <koikaze> and <dear prince> but i think those are more twitter crying eyes heart eyes stickered jerry than straight terror, and also <manatsu no ame> is more a straight up villain song for yukimura than like terror. ok now that i've gone through a million songs that aren't even on my list:
last game - yukimura seiichi & echizen ryoma
this is not even the angstbait song on yukimura's last songs album (which would be senkoku but tbh that song is so blatantly angstbait it makes me a bit embarrassed to listen to like i know it's yukimura's stream of consciousness but i shouldn't be listening to that. like respectfully i'll be looking away) but there is something soooooooo [man clutching sink and sobbing] about this song, which is ofc about extreme terror event of yukimura v ryoma at nats finals, but even apart from that everything from the electric guitar + synth riffs (she's giving metric synthetica i think) to the way the lyrics are strangely hopeful and Flavour Of Mentorship even though ryoma is literally blowing up yukimura's society... it's really true that you can still love your society destabilisers. and it's true that the present may be coming to a close, but this isn't the end TT__TT
yume no tsuzuki ii - yukimura seiichi
ok it's true that i am particularly vulnerable to yukimura terror but like it seriously is so fucked up that he had to experience the gradual degradation of his body that had always brought him victory before he fell ill almost to the point of death and it was all just because of horrible unluckiness like it was nothing that he could control. and he couldn't do anything but watch his dream recede further and further away. i think this song really captures that grief and horror so well but in a calm subtle wistful synthful way that isn't too in your face like senkoku, it's about yukimura trying to reach out for the mirage of his old dream of victory and the sunset bridge scene where he made the promise of rikkai's third consecutive victory with sanada. [essay about THE CONTINUATION OF THE DREAM redacted for length] and i always think it must have been so insanely painful to keep holding on to that hope (let alone actually rebuilding himself after his surgery) but HE LIVED BITCH
jibun kakumei revolution - yukimura seiichi & niou masaharu
it's myyy list and i can put 3 yukimura songs on it if i want. i think this song is very sad in both lyrics and like the way the song sounds. like the lyrics are pretty niou-directed about like having a sense of self and yukimura's belief that niou does have the resolve the win deep down in his heart but it kind of feels like they are not quite talking about the same thing so it's very yukiniou sacred text to me. i always ): over "if it's you, even miracles can be awakened" i think that really is how they feel about each other in the end
bible - shiraishi kuranosuke
i truly cannot believe shiraishi debuted with like THE most iconic legendary fucked up beautiful Surely It Is A Privilege To Approach The End Still Believing In Something song... and literally kept up this standard through the rest of his discography. like bible is legitimately one of the best tennis songs full stop. and this kind of like, stubbornly idealistic and hopeful despite indescribable pain and uncertainty vibe is not something i would even really have expected from shiraishi as a character song esp during origpuri era before his u17 insecurity->power level-up character development arc... bible was a prophecy. also instant tearing up over KITTO... SEKAI GA YURAGU.... YORU NI MO. also the extended pause at the end of the second verse before it goes into the second chorus seriously like experiencing divine revelation... it really is an infinite future opening up ahead
go on - shiraishi kuranosuke
shiraishi appearing twice on my fave jokes list and twice on my fave terror list he literally has the range and you wouldn't even expect it from him because he's literally not even that funny or tragic in canon but his 2000s pop slay just knocks it out of the park consistently. this song is also like unexpected depths because it is about getting up over and over again and keeping going no matter what which is literally always The Most heart touching theme to me of all time... i love determination and refusal to back down in the face of all possible odds. but until his u17 development, shiraishi is not really someone whose hard work is a particular focus of the narrative (unlike guys like atobe or niou or sanada) which i think is a product of how his style is built around efficiency and no-nonsense effortless simplicity and also how he doesn't have obvious mental issues and trauma, but this really does make you think about how much effort shiraishi must be putting in completely uncommented on in order to be a competent captain and a competent tennis player...
color - hirakoba rin & fuji syusuke
yes this is my favourite tennis song ever it's so beautiful and perfect to me but i really do think it's very terror and specifically for rin, fuji is kind of just here to be thee generous and give rin a platform via duet. i think this is a song about higa dark horses coming so close to kite's dream that became all of their shared dream but ultimately falling short. my white wish disappears into the sky without coming true / but even now the transparent wind of blue summer blows through my chest <- cat_that_ate_lemon.png. like the Summer You Can Never Return To visuals in this song go fucking crazyyy like glancinc back on a bright and empty road to be greeted by only your shadow, the sparkling water, the white sun, the red flowers... higa being mostly comic relief and rin himself not even really having much ideological dedication to tennis kind of makes this all hit harder like man it actually is kinda serious 😦
michi - inui sadaharu
inui randomly having this like tails gets trolled as fuck song is so left field ngl like it's true that inui is involved in the highly fucked up terror storyline of the nats d2 square but to me the terror more comes from yanagi's end because of how deeply reinvolvement with inui destabilises him and by extension rikkai whose society is built on the premise that the strategic foundations yanagi lays are faultless and objective... which they are not. but i am rikkai no onna so i could be biased. but i don't even think this song seems like it's directly about the ghosts of doubles partners past and present situation it's kind of more like general terror about like, not crossing paths, not knowing what the future brings. like what could "for whose sake do you hurt / for whose sake do you cry" possibly be about?? idk but that modulation right at the instrumental outro seriously brings me to tears every time
days - ootori chotaro
MY POOR OOTORI... a song that is about his impending separation anxiety re: shishido graduating and trying to be optimistic about the future. like it's true that silver pair inherently just extremely touches my heart because i'm not immune to REAL TRUE LOVE and especially when it's so new and fragile because they've really only just gotten politically arranged married and discovered they're actually soulmates and now they already have to part again. this is a song that is ultimately very hopeful but it's still just like so fucked up to me emotionally and conceptually T_T
meteor drive - niou masaharu
look i know that fuji v niou is really low hanging terror fruit and see also neji to driver from my jokes post but this song was sort of the last straw that opened my eyes to just how traumatising this match was for niou and how absolutely desperate he was during it and how fucked up he must have been afterwards when he realised yukimura set him up and he was always meant to fail but he can't even hate yukimura for it because he ultimately loves yukimura too. the literal yume no tsuzuki namedrop in the lyrics was sooooooo tails gets trolled to me like this TO ME is as good as confirmation that yukimura did rig nats and niou knows it. also think that unlike neji to driver (addressing fuji) or pain karamiau futatsu no story (niou and fuji in dialogue) this song is actually niou addressing himself... you can't grasp anything in those two arms of yours... OKNT
entrust to the next - yanagi renji
yanagi's ksdkkj song about kirihara that is fittingly fucked up as all hell... like what the hell yanagi loves kirihara so much and believes in him so much and is so proud of him and has no hesitation in handing the legacy of rikkai down to him because he has faith that kirihara can succeed where they failed and he is waiting for kirihara to reach them and he thinks kirihara can surpass all of yanagi's predictions and become stronger and greater than anyone could ever imagine. i hope i pass away btw
squall - sanada genichiro
ok so this is a Never Give Up Even If You Die song by a guy you would expect such a song from but it literally is so heart touching to me every time... 1800 i love TRYHARDS so much and i really love the instrumentals i think the main theme has a really nostalgic sound that reminds me of the 80s/90s jp music i grew up on. the part in the prechorus that's like, winning is so engraved into my body that i forget how to hurt IS SO FUCKED UP??? this song really does make me have a little TT about sanada's taurean determination
speeder run - kamio akira
this was the main event song of last year's easter event and i wasn't really paying attention to the lyrics back then but like this song literally opens with "if you're going to give up, don't wear this black" i was like 😦 when i listened properly i love a fanatical devotion to team identity. and literally wtf is "until i can't run anymore" // "these footprints won't betray me" HELLAUR??? i think there are some extremely unplumbed depths of kamio and fudomine and kamio->fudomine terror in this song...
ano basho made ~sloping road~ - kawamura takeshi
dude this song is so fucked up... like the wistful cheerful upbeatness of a song that is about saying goodbye to a treasured memory juxtaposed with the absolute hell that kawamura goes through physically for tennis And the knowledge that he will be quitting next year... like the expression i make at "it's a beautiful day, glittering / i won't forget we were always there / we were always there" LIKE MY GOD.......... THE PAST TENSE............... HOW COULD THIS BE
hikari - kirihara akaya
what else could i close on but theeeeeeee single most terror inducing song in all of tennis. tbh i don't really know what i want to say here because this song is so insanely harrowing to me it's difficult to think about. i think that like... a lot of the other songs on this list are like, things that the characters consciously think / understand but kirihara is so representative of pure instinct to me that i don't think he actually is articulating this to himself he's just like kinda grasping it on an intuitive level. like it's not something he's properly come to terms with but of course kirihara akaya is going to approach the end on fire with belief, he just doesn't know any other way to exist. this song is soooo essence of the ideal burns in you like a fever / or not like a fever, like a second heart. like the way the song ends on everything that i see / everything in my world / prays with a trembling heart / "don't let this be the end" <- and it was an imperfect cadence and this really isn't the end because kirihara akaya will inherit the world!!!!!!!!!!!
also i was trying really hard not to... ship goggles terror so i left off songs like <for yourself> and <kokushoku no aura> which i feel like are not necessarily terror in and of themselves but because i associate them so heavily with snyk terror they have become extremely terror to me. this intro is getting long af but i also want to say i almost included <koikaze> and <dear prince> but i think those are more twitter crying eyes heart eyes stickered jerry than straight terror, and also <manatsu no ame> is more a straight up villain song for yukimura than like terror. ok now that i've gone through a million songs that aren't even on my list:
