“The cool Ochi-kun and the cheerful Mori-kun make for a contrasting senpai-kouhai combination. Ochi-kun, who is a leading figure for Mori-kun, creates a well-coordinated pair.”

“the main thing about the twin towers is that they.. get destroyed”
— cindi

this manifesto discusses the SUPER HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL DOUBLES SPECIALISTS aka 月寿 aka twin towers aka 910 (i made this name up) from the new prince of tennis by happy media destroyer konomi takeshi. now i am a firm believer in the shinteni highschoolers only being allowed to exist as accessories to prop up middleschooler character arcs, but given that mori and ochi individually have significant positive influences on multiple beloved highrankers, and also represent my school 3pick between the two of them, i’m justified in allowing them interiority as well. the little we get to see of their dynamic is just sooooooooooo satisfying to me because i <3 tropes and i am literally not immune to 😄❤️x😐💙…

i am praying that the formatting doesn't fuck up on dw but you can also access a gdoc version here if it is easier to read!

PART 1: THE CHARACTERS

“i’m a mix of invincible shiten and rikkai!”

NAME: mori jusaburo
RANK: 10
HEIGHT: 191.63 cm
SUN SIGN: capricorn
SCHOOL: rikkai high, 1st year
DOUBLES PARTNERS: ochi tsukimitsu, yanagi renji
TENNIS POWERS: REM

MORI is the brash and peppy 10th strongest high school player in the country. he’s the baby of the u17 first string and also the only first year highschooler in the genius10, which speaks to his immense skill that he’s only now beginning to polish after his recent development of a work ethic under ochi’s supervision. in the past, he was a lazy slacker who never went to practice and coasted by on his natural talent until he was brutally cut down to size upon entering high school… by none other than ochi himself. mori also attended shitenhoji in his first year of middle school before transferring to rikkai. he is the annoying big yappy cat to his middleschooler clone kirihara’s annoying little yappy dog!

“i’m not really interested”
NAME: ochi tsukimitsu
RANK: 9
HEIGHT: 226 cm
SUN SIGN: leo
SCHOOL: hyotei high, 3rd year
DOUBLES PARTNERS: mori jusaburo, oishi shuichiro
TENNIS POWERS: mach serve, mental pressure

OCHI is the icy and impassive 9th strongest high school player in the country. nicknamed “mental assassin” for the way he can make even the most resilient of people crumble simply by glaring at them, he was the last captain to lead hyotei to nationals prior to atobe’s arrival, so he’s obviously an extremely powerful and imposing player. according to yanagi, his mach serve, the ultimate powercrept version of the various super fast serves we’ve seen so far in the series, has a 100% accuracy rate. thanks to his height, aura and reticence, he’s quite a terrifying presence, but he’s surprisingly kind when it comes down to it... you just know he is the secret cat lover type, and indeed he has a pet cat.

what can i say… the dots are there just waiting to be connected!

PART 2: CANON TIMELINE REVIEW

PRE-CANON
in mori’s first year of high school and ochi’s third year, they meet for the first time at the kanto tournament. mori’s been up to his usual slacker ways but he’s just so good that the coach still keeps him on the regulars, so his ego is massively inflated at this point and he’s sure he’ll be able to breeze through thanks to his natural talent just like he did for all of middle school. unfortunately, these are the shark-infested waters of the high school circuit and mori is no longer the big fish in a little pond that he was as a rikkai regular in the middle school circuit, and his opponent this time is hyotei’s captain ochi tsukimitsu:

instead of the easy victory mori expected, he suffers his first ever official loss 0-6 to ochi. ochi crushes mori so thoroughly and humiliatingly that it pushes mori right to the verge of quitting tennis, until he happens to see his former kouhai yukimura struggling through PT at the hospital and realises he’d been taking his skill for granted. from then on, he starts actually attending practice, and levels up enough to receive an invite to u-17, where the coaches are like “wow this guy’s history of slackerism is crazy we should probably partner him with someone who will make sure he stays disciplined” and expeditiously arrange his doubles marriage to none other than the intimidating leader of one of the strictest and most competitive schools…

AND THE REST IS HISTORYYY (see Pt 3)

U-17 GENIUS10 SHUFFLE MATCHES
we first meet ochi and mori in the present timeline as the 9th and 10th ranked members of the first string, who have just returned from their overseas tennis tour. they’re up first in the genius10 vs middleschoolers shuffle matches, playing doubles against atobe and niou, who coincidentally attend the same middle schools ochi and mori graduated from.

as the elite of the elite, they both have a lot of pride in their abilities (manga cap but it illustrates the point):

but it’s mori who gleefully brags about ochi’s incredible serve like it's his own:

their dynamic unfolds with mori as the playful, chatty jokester and ochi as the serious, curt playmaker:
[niou-as-tezuka unleashes tezuka zone]
mori: hey, he's got skills!
ochi: get in position. we'll attack.

mori taunts atobe and niou throughout the match while ochi looms silently:

with a single glance, ochi shatters atobe’s cool, causing him to consecutively double fault into losing a game and then make unforced error after unforced error. niou-as-tezuka takes over using tezuka phantom to deflect the balls out and let atobe rebalance himself, which is really touching due to the immense and potentially permanent strain it places on niou’s elbow and is worthy of its own post but it’s not the point of this one [vein_kid.png trying to stop myself from talking about it]… anyway in contrast with mori’s goading, ochi is quite sportsmanlike, acknowledging that atobe is the first person to recover so quickly from the pressure ochi exerts. the first set goes to tiebreak and since niou’s body has reached breaking point kabaji steps in and hits a ball aimed at atobe, which is obviously against the rules, but ochi generously allows the point to be counted even though it will cost him and mori the set. i find it interesting that ochi makes the decision to allow the interference on behalf of both him and mori—it really confirms that ochi’s the one calling the shots.

ofc atobe and niou make a comeback in the third set even though niou is completely incapacitated thanks to shounen sports superpower magicks, and at match point atobe uses atobe kingdom to target mori’s absolute blind spot, which he is physically unable to react to given the limitations of his skeleton. but then mori STRAIGHT UP DISLOCATES HIS SHOULDER in order to bypass this and set up a desperate last-ditch shot for ochi, entrusting the entire outcome of the match to ochi. just as niou sacrificed his body for atobe earlier, mori gambles his own on ochi:

continuing the well-established tradition of rikkai players destroying their bodies for victory. mori believes in ochi’s abilities with absolute and unquestioning faith, to the point where he’s willing to fuck up his own limbs. but the thing is, he does this all the time! that’s the nature of his doubles power when he lets ochi control his unconscious body (see Pt 3).

unfortunately mori’s gamble does not pay off and the super high school level doubles specialists lose. despite their pride, they concede defeat gracefully, handing their rank pins and first-string positions over to atobe and niou, and ochi even compliments atobe and niou on their doubles combination (he’s really nice actually!). though this ultimately has no real point because the middleschoolers end up on a separate team from the highschoolers anyway and mori and ochi get their ranks reinstated. so mori and niou just wrecked their arms for nothing thanks so much konomi.

there’s also this sweet shot of ochi’s arm going around mori and mori leaning into ochi when tohno hits a ball at them in anger for losing (deflected by a ball hit by kite):

the size difference is sooo good here… and ochi’s protectiveness of his injured doubles partner <33

in the manga, ochi and mori get a little more focus and characterisation, so i’m just going to give some commentary on their extra scenes or where things differ from the anime. their individual introductions, responding to the question of where the rank 11-20 first stringers are, establish that 1) mori is a bitch… the smirk and the nail inspecting and the snide comment, ok sharpay evans 2) ochi is Not a bitch and takes things pretty seriously, but is still willing to indulge mori’s flights of fancy:

there’s also an additional scene from the night before their shuffle match against atobe and niou, with more #MORI_IS_A_CHATTY_BITCH and #OCHI_SUPREME_INDIFFERENCE:

really highlights the way mori just does not shut up <3

i love the body language here once again setting up mori as the smug casual one and ochi as the expressionless serious one… it’s about the COMPLEMENTARY PERSONALITIES:

more mori bragging about ochi’s skill:

ochi stopping mori from taunting atobe… VERY interesting wrt ochi’s greater inclination towards sportsmanship than mori and mori’s willingness to listen to ochi… reminds me a little of yanagi reining kirihara back from crushing inui’s glasses at nationals finals d2, particularly given that yanagi/kirihara is explicitly paralleled with ochi/mori at the world cup when yanagi/mori play doubles:

see Pt 4 for further discussions regarding this match ^_^

U-17 WORLD CUP
since they’re paired up with different middleschoolers during the world cup, they mostly just get a few cute background interactions. in general they’re usually standing and sitting next to e/o which i won’t include since it’s too many caps, but just know that They Could Have Stood/Sat Next To Anyone Else

GENRE A: mori expresses opinion, looks to ochi for approval, receives it in the form of ochi’s lack of disagreement. now you may think that ochi constantly telling mori he doesn’t care demonstrates his lack of interest in mori, but it’s actually only his lack of interest in the conversation subject. see Part 4 for a longer discussion on why i believe ochi actually cares very much about mori

[m: he has dual nationalities. cool, right, tsuki-san?
o: … i don’t really care]

GENRE B: mori hyping up ochi like a good bf

GENRE C: pair reaction panels because they come as a set!

GENRE D: whatever the hell this is from ochi/oishi doubles against greece. sooo… ochi doesn’t do high fives, he slaps his doubles partner’s ass with his racquet? Noted.

the most significant 910 moment from the world cup arcs is during the crack filler chapter where the highschoolers infiltrate coach mifune’s hotel room to try and secretly edit duke into the lineup for the match against france and ochi does his boyfriend duties and rescues mori from a lion by staring it down… yeah his mental pressure superpowers are apparently strong enough to defeat a lion. also scope out ochi throwing his arm across mori’s chest:

BONUS: HOKAGOPURI
not technically part of canon but written by konomi so i’ll include it here anyway. literally Why Are You Gay!!!

PART 3: MY EXPANDED VISION

there is a massive gap in canon between ochi and mori being distantly impersonal rivals (rivals is not even the right word here, it implies too much emotional investment on both sides… i don’t think ochi gave mori another thought after bagelling him) prior to u-17 and the incredible doubles partnership they display as the super high school level doubles specialists of the first string. from mori’s tenipuri party profile:

“I was a little worried about playing doubles with Tsuki-san at first. But, before I knew it we were in harmony, practices started getting more fun, and… it became natural to not just skip out of all of that.”

so naturally i have been developing an epic 50k slowburn onesided enemies to arranged doubles partners to Oh Shit We Are Kind Of Massively Compatible On Every Possible Level to TRUELOVE narrative to fill in the spaces!

i imagine that mori holds some resentment towards ochi for the public humiliation he put him through, even if mori understands logically that it was his own fault for slacking off… like his pride was so hurt he nearly quit tennis altogether so i think it makes sense for him to be like Oh fuckkkk not this guy why why why!! and despite being a pretty nice guy i think ochi probably wouldn’t be all that happy about being saddled with a first-year whose abilities he doesn’t hold in high esteem as a partner either. i believe their doubles partnership starts on wary, rocky ground. they’re bound to run into communication problems especially since ochi just Does Not Talk and literally has rbf as a superpower. in the early days of working together mori probably constantly thinks ochi is mad at him...

(as an aside, it would be interesting if mori started calling ochi “tsuki-san” overfamiliarly as a way to try to get under his skin or test the waters… mori is a rikkai regular and being a bitch comes with the territory. ofc it doesn’t work, but then it sticks, and transforms over time into genuine open affection. maybe ochi is even charmed by mori’s forwardness i bet nobody has ever tried to do that to him before because he’s so intimidating)

so they’re a little bit into their new partnership when mori discovers his sleepwalking superpower, REM—he can basically enter an unconscious state similar to REM at will where he is able to maximise his natural athleticism and flexibility to flawlessly carry out the directives of his partner while sleepwalking, like a henchman version of muga no kyoichi. the nature of this ability requires him to have total trust in his partner—they’re literally puppeteering him after all, he’s giving complete control of his body over to them. how do you move from being unwilling group project teammates to the fervent eagerness with which mori dedicates himself to ochi’s hand we see in canon?

maybe mori is the one who takes the leap and is like “okay! tsuki-san, tell me what to do and i’ll do it!” or maybe, since he is very very practised in the art of wielding authority, ochi is the one who tells mori to trust him, because ochi will take care of him. either way the late night practice sessions i’m envisioning as they figure out the parameters of mori’s newfound abilities… mori returning to consciousness each time and asking if he did well and ochi ruffling his hair in response… mori absolutely just lighting up each time he receives praise from ochi…

essentially, mori needs someone to direct him and keep him focused, someone who will remind him of the reason he stays motivated and who will firmly pull him back from any remaining slacker habits. When The Mental Assassin Is Your Partner, He Becomes Your Mental Doctor…! rehabilitating rikkai’s wayward son!! meanwhile, ochi finds himself endeared by mori’s persistently cheerful earnestness and rapidly developing hardworkerisms and willingness to obey. slowly they grow accustomed to each other to the point where on their free days, mori will go find ochi in the library (ochi is a member of the student librarian committee) and curl up to go to sleep beside him JUST LIKE A CAT…

PART 4: THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THEM

> mori is a 0 ochi is a 1 can i make it any more obvious!
  • i genuinely find it soooooo touching that, despite being >190cm, mori managed to find someone an entire 30cm taller than him to cling to and make him feel tiny as is his divine right… like Good For Him Good For Him
  • mori is like constantly heart eyes’ing towards ochi… he makes his admiration for ochi so clear and i’ll be honest my investment in this ship is 90% because mori is my highschooler onepick and ochi is HIS onepick, so it makes me really happy that the boy he loudly adores is more quietly but equally adoring of him in return
  • sorry to be like this but i am fixedpositions powerdynamics lover i cannot change this and the fact that ochi > mori in terms of age, rank, height, size, authority, strength and skill is most pleasing to me
> ochi is not someone you would expect to be touchy-feely, but he often makes physical contact with mori, who DOES come across as clingy. my interpretation of this is that mori likes physical touch so ochi uses it as a way to ground and reassure mori… ochi picking up on the ways that mori processes the world and making an effort to incorporate them into his own vocabulary of gestures
  • alternatively: ochi is a man of few words and prefers to communicate his affection for mori via small but significant touches, which is just as emotionally moving to me
> like, the entire basis of ochi’s character is that absolutely nothing fazes him. he doesn’t care about anything. his catchphrase is literally さして興味はない (i’m not interested/i don't care). BUT HE CARES SO MUCH ABOUT MORI!!!
  • he is always attentive to mori’s mood, comforting him with a shoulder touch after yanagi fights with mori:
  • and patting his back in emotional support when mori’s beloved kouhai yukimura makes a breakthrough during the match against tezuka:
  • he props mori up at the end of their match with atobe and niou after mori’s dislocated his shoulder with such care that i am going to break out the “tender” descriptor… seriously guys the haptics and proxemics and paralanguageeeeeeee here, i have not recovered from how he’s completely focused on and tilted towards mori in the second image:
ochi is so scarily imposing but he is so so indulgent of mori and protective towards him TT__TT mori is SPECIAL to him, ochi doesn’t act like this with anyone else!! he’s distantly kind but he doesn’t pay this kind of close attention to anyone other than mori… HE ONLY GOT ONE DOUBLES PARTNER

> mori calls ochi “tsuki-san” which is an affectionate shortening of ochi’s first name with an added honorific for formality, but this is clearly still a huge gesture of closeness—no other senpai/kouhai doubles partnership has the younger member addressing the older member with a nickname derived from their first name (cf: ootori calls shishido “shishido-san” and kirihara calls yanagi “yanagi-senpai” which is even more formal i think)
  • on the other hand, ochi just calls mori “mori”—again, this is unusual, since the older half of most of the other senpai/kouhai doubles partnerships i can recall address the younger half by their first name. being formsofaddressfucker69 and powerdynamicsfucker69 this is really interesting to me!! the reversal of the usual hierarchical formality levels matches so well with their personalities and i know mori just dies on the presumably rare occasions that ochi firstnames him
  • and this goes back to ochi’s Actions Speak Louder Than Words thing—he’s formally distant in how he addresses mori but he reveals his fondness for mori in how gently he treats him, and also in allowing mori to be so casual with him
  • anyway… [mori vc] tsuki-san~~~~ is just SOOOOOO personal to me
> can we talk about how mori’s tennis superpower is literally just unconsciously and perfectly obeying his partner’s orders, and ochi’s tennis superpower is absolute control via forcing others into submission

> their joint character song [pathway to victory] is SO MUCH FUN it’s one of my favourite tenipuri songs everrrr… all the comments on this upload are like “it sounds like a super strong pokemon is about to come out” and it is so true. i love that they sing an octave apart i LOVE the part where they say their ranks like fuck yeah you ARE number 9 and number 10… the va casting for them is so perfect

PART 5: FANWORK + CONCLUSION

twitter user dlrow_ is the backbone of the 910 community and every morning i open up her media tab to browse through like it is the daily newspaper. here is a selection of some of my favourites of her work, i have attempted to dodgily translate some of the shorter ones with my grade 10 japanese but you will just have to absorb the vibes of the longer ones:
  • abigcat_mori in ochi’s lap - starting off with literally my favouritesttttttttttt 910 art ever… HAPTICS AND PROXEMICS GUYS the way they’re curled into each other and the placement of their arms makes me TT like nothing else
  • matchy hairclips - content catering to MEEEE #1 hairclips stan #1 rank indicators stan… their hairclips match each other’s eyes!! AND they’re in their school uniforms thus reminding me that they attend my 2pick schools :’)
m: tsu~ki~mi~tsu~sa~~n
o: mori… jusaburo
(echoes: jusaburo… jusaburo… jusaburo… jusaburo)
[t/n this is EXACTLY what i mean by mori being instantly obliterated when ochi says his first name]
  • ochi bday comic
    • too long to translate line-by-line but this one is VERY central to my vision… basically it’s set on ochi’s birthday the year after u17 (so ochi is 1st yr uni, mori is 2nd yr hs). ochi meets mori at the train station, mori asks him what uni is like, ochi asks if he wants to go see and mori is like yes!!! but is it really okay? it’s your birthday but i’ve made you meet up with me out of the blue, and pick me up from the station, and i want to see your apartment, and i want to see your uni, and i want to play tennis…
    • o: “i promised i was going to be there so i came” / m: “huh?” / o: “that’s enough for now”
    • flashback to u17 camp - another first stringer (i assume kimijima) teases mori about how mori hasn’t skipped practice in a while, and ochi firmly shuts him down by saying the same phrase “that’s enough for now,” then kimijima complains that ochi is spoiling mori
    • m: re~~~ally, you’re spoiling me, tsuki-san
      • [t/n i seriously died… THIS IS SO POWERFUL]
    • then they get to ochi’s apartment and mori is super excited about everything especially the cat flap
    • ochi notices that mori is sweating and turns on the aircon and says he’ll make them some barley tea
      • [t/n THIS IS WHAT I MEANNN BY OCHI PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO MORIII]
    • then mori hands the cooler bag he’s carrying to ochi, saying it’s a birthday gift. inside are HOME GROWN VEGETABLES <3 then they eat some soba (ochi’s fave food) with the vegetables in question together <3
P1
m: oh?
m: tsuki-san is still asleep…?
m: this is an unusual thing🎵
m: anyway
m: it’s surreal~ no matter how many times i see it

P2
m: up we go!
m: tsuki-san, it’s morning~
m: this person is fast asleep… the slight breathing of a sleeping person
m: i want to wake him up…

P3:
m: ah! you’re awake
m: good morninggfkjdshg?!
m: tsuki-sa—
o: pet cat’s name
m: huh??

P4:
m: … could it be, you’re still half-asleep?
o: ………
m: nya~~
o: …. mori
m: ahaha you woke up
o: …. troublesome….
m: no no! it’s a good morning!
o: …….
  • game, set - fanart for the match where ochi killed mori, love the more serious atmosphere compared to dlrow’s usual lightheartedness
  • precanon comic - i don’t remember enough about this one to summarise and it’s too long to reread/translate fully but i DO remember this aligned perfectly with my visions as outlined in Pt 3
not dlrow:
m: tsuki-san?!
o: i heard tanegashima say that this should be done to tall guys
o: … how is it, are you happy?
m: 😳😯
m: i also want to do that to tsuki-san!! please let me stroke!!
o: i’m good. i’m not really interested
P1:
someone offscreen: mori, that’s a hyotei cardigan, isn’t it? it’s very big on you~
m: got it from my boyfriend~~

P2:
m: NO WAYYYYYYY!!!!
[mori-kun who skipped school to go to ochi’s graduation]
m: tsuki-san’s second button is missing?!
m: huh!? not just the second button but all the buttons are missing!!!?
o: so the problem is…?
m: IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE MIIIIIINE
[ochi just gives him the entire cardigan]

ultimately for me the appeal of 910 is that mori gets the stern but fond taller older bf he deserves and ochi gets a cute pet cat to spoil. rt cindi: “which stoic 226cm monster wouldn’t want a pliant chipper catboy bf who ISNT deterred his cold demeanor and thick walls like everyone else in his life tho.” i believe they are perfect for each other.

it makes me a bit sad that they won’t meet on the high school circuit or at camp again because ochi is graduating and ageing out of u17 next year, so this is the first and last time they’ll get to have this experience together. i hope they get to keep playing as opponents or as partners outside of the school circuit <3 let’s go endgame highschoolers otp!!

ASHHHHHH I had so much fun reading this even if I didn't remember who these people were... iirc last time I caught up with shinteni it was angel kirihara littering feathers on the court. ANYWAY, this was so well written and structured and cited I could really feel your joy(madness?) through this.

- I am s fond of mori now... self sacrificial plays are my jam. ('at match point atobe uses atobe kingdom to target mori’s absolute blind spot, which he is physically unable to react to given the limitations of his skeleton. but then mori STRAIGHT UP DISLOCATES HIS SHOULDER') - I SNORTED OUT LOUD KONOMI-SENSEI IS THIS STILL TENNIS?? but then the parallel with niou killed me... and even then the ghost of tezuka killed me even further.

- "see his former kouhai yukimura struggling through PT at the hospital and realises he’d been taking his skill for granted." yelled out loud I'M CONNECTING THE DOTS
