top 5 detective conan canon hets
Oct. 25th, 2021 01:51 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
i've been meaning to make this post for like a month but i keep getting stuck on what qualifies as "canon" and/or "het" because SOMETIMES IT TAKES A VERY HIGH IQ TO
this is kind of severely a list of someone who misunderstood the assignment set by themselves but i just want to say that i think detective conan truly has the best canon het lineup in any media i've ever consumed i genuinely like all of them i will support any canon conan het for free.
but before i get into it i want to first explain how i feel about akai/akemi, which i don't ship in the sense that i don't want to see shippy content for them and will in fact avoid looking if i do happen to see it, but i think it's absolutely vital to the narrative that they were in love for real and that akai will always carry akemi in his heart. so it's really really important to me that akai/akemi is preserved... strictly as something in the past but there nonetheless. the more i think about it the more convinced i grow that akemi is basically the most important person in conan tbh like even though she dies in her introductory case, her ongoing impact on the four pillars (TO ME. but 1140 literally are tho) of the main story can't be emphasised enough.
ANYWAY:
5. heiji/kazuha
i'm not immune to a good old fashioned ケンカップル!!! possibly the most emotionally dense couple out of all the hets definitely the one that has made the least progress despite being like the second het cp to be introduced. it took them a million eps to even realise they had feelings for each other and then another million eps furiously denying it, it's always one step forward three steps back with them... constantly refusing to acknowledge their feelings unless they're in a life-or-death situation where they suddenly realise this might be their last opportunity to tell e/o how they feel... and then as soon as they're safe they go back to bickering and violence and pretending they aren't in love. heiji henchmanzoning kazuha in a desperate attempt to divert the conversation topic the funniest instance of this pattern, closely followed by heiji being so distracted by kazuha in the fairy's lip case that he didn't notice that she had clearly been replaced by kaito LIKE your childhood friend just switched from atashi 1pp to uchi 1pp and you are investigating a heist by a guy known for shapeshifting HELLO?? WAKE UP??? and then he even nearly kisses kaito lmfaoooo my poor kazuha missing out on getting passionately kabedon'd and (almost) shut-up-kiss'd by heiji )': would have been so spicy. though recently they're both trying to confess to e/o but keep getting derailed by outside circumstances while the other one is like *clueless* so maybe there will be some more progress uhhh soon. in another 200 chapters maybe.
actually the majority of my interest in heikazu comes from heishinkazuran ot4 i think they are much more interesting in tokyosaka detectives polycule context because heiji is so obsessed with shinichi and kazuha is also obsessed with ran though not to the same degree the heiji is head over heels for shinichi... i do endgame heikazu though :)
4. makoto/sonoko
i did recently watch fist of blue sapphire which is makosono focused so they're fresh on my mind but i've liked them soooo much since their intro where makoto spent the whole case being villainbaited until the climax where he took a knife to the arm like it was nothing in order to save sonoko TT i love that boycrazy ojousama sonoko gets a handsome perfect love interest who is totally head-over-heels devoted to her knight x lady style. even when they were fighting over makoto quitting a tournament bc sonoko was in danger and sonoko told him to get out of her sight he still stayed outside her hotel room guarding her he seriously cares so much about her!!!
i actually find makoto's old fashioned values re: telling sonoko to cover up more very charming because 1) he's like that because he's extremely respectful of sonoko 2) sonoko's life's wish is to be a trophy wife and she enjoys the subtle indication of possessiveness and she doesn't change her fashion style anyway 3) i think a little bit of gentlemanly chauvinism in hetshipping is fun. plus makoto is the strongest guy in the whole series literally universe-breakingly strong and willing to risk his life to protect sonoko it's free bodyguard romance! makoto is usually offscreen competing in karate tournaments overseas but my heart is so so touched every time he shows up right in the nick of time to rescue sonoko by beating up an entire gang of armed thugs or obliterating an enemy martial arts champion while carrying sonoko on his back etc.
sonoko's confidence and excitement vs makoto's shyness and politeness is sooooo cute esp when sonoko ends up flustered as well due to makoto's chivalry and honesty. i think it's so endearing how makoto when he's not in berserk bodyguard mode is really awkward and super courteous And That Is Ok because miss rich heiress sonoko has enough social graces and flair for both of them. and also i love how they call e/o by firstname + -san as if they were already married hehe. it's very sweet firstlove vibes <3
3. matsuda/sato
i don't endgame this (takagi/sato + hagiwara/matsuda is the true route!!) but it's soooo appealing to me, i like the slap-slap-kiss clash between sato's headstrong fierceness and matsuda's ya bad boy with secret heart of gold personality!! the scene where sato expects matsuda to make fun of her for her attachment to the memory of her dad but he's kind about it instead was sooo good. because matsuda also understands grief... the laidback experienced jaded mentor x tryhard idealistic rookie mentee vibes i ate delicious too. also beautiful visual cp of ever.
since matsuda died when they were just barely starting to get to know each other and connect, to me matsusa is mostly about the unrealised potential of their insane chemistry that will never come to fruition and so sato will always be left wondering what things might have been like if matsuda had lived and they had gone through with falling in love... it's not so much that she had deep feelings for him already but that she knows she could have developed them in the future if they'd had the chance. but they never will. and that's why she's so hung up on it. my preferred flavour of matsusa is the painful hindsight what-if and matsuda always being a beautiful out-of-reach memory, even as sato gradually accepts his death and moves on but doesn't forget.
in the everyone lives happy ending world line i think matsusa date for a while and then amicably break up after a long cycle of explosive argument -> epic makeup sex -> explosive argument -> epic makeup sex etc etc... then matsuda gets together with hagiwara and occasionally they still have fwb (exes with benefits?) threesomes (before sato and takagi get together ofc)... naturally takagi finds out about this from yumi and it only increases sato's apparent out-of-his-league-ness but TRUE LOVE will triumph <3
2. yamato/yui
the dark and gritty factor got randomly dialled up to max intensity in nagano and i love to see it... my favourite police detective love story :') childhood friends to (superior/subordinate coworkers) to lovers trajectory that gets interrupted when their mentor dies under mysterious circumstances and they're both determined to solve the case and figure out his murderer. and then yamato goes missing chasing a suspect down into an avalanche and is presumed dead, so yui decides to marry into the family of another suspect so she can secretly continue the investigation from the inside since the only person she'd want to marry is gone and she believes the sacrifice is worth it... but of course yamato is not dead and when they meet again it's as the newly widowed wife of a victim and the police inspector investigating the case.
i loveeee how they slingshot between politely formal distance and unintentional ultra familiarity in the furinkazan case... yamato calls her okusan but in moments of intensity the old closeness slips out so helplessly. i was seriously like TT when they're at another crime scene and snap into detectives mode upon seeing a dead body and yamato calls her by her maiden name uehara ordering her to tell him the time for the sake of the record and she automatically complies and doesn't realise until yamato awkwardly apologises for the overstep due to habit as she is no longer his subordinate. as historyfucker9000 and formsofaddressfucker69 this exchange killed me:
I LOVE.... the painful not-quite-exes as they never had anything going on but the forcible imposition of distance even though the feelings are still there... all due to DUTY! yamato's willingness to investigate even the woman he loves as a suspect (and his similar willingness to investigate his best friendrival komei as a suspect in the red wall murder case) is because he prioritises duty over sentiment, and ofc yui only married into the torada family for the sake of duty in the first place... the entire reason they are in this position is because they are both so dedicated to their ideals of truth and justice.
luckily yui rejoins the police force after all that so they can pick up where they left off even though they can't undo the years in between. but that is ok! LOVE WINS. also i do 3p endgame nagano trio because i truly believe komei should be there too and it's so funny to me that the centre of the triangle is yamato... meanwhile komei and yui are courteous and professional coworkers who get along well... which is also romantic TO ME.
1. shinichi/ran
MY PERFECT TRUELOVE STARCROSSED MAIN CANON HETS.... ALWAYS BE HAPPY IN LOVE TOGETHER FOREVER T_________T i don't want them to undergo hardships or suffering they've been challenged enough they've been apart long enough i want them to only have beautiful simple happy moments and feelings for the rest of their lives together. the world is very cruel but SHINRAN should always be in the light.
idk why the combination of tropes i don't particularly otherwise enjoy gets me soooo bad when it comes to shinran... the childhood friends firstloveism kills me even tho i'm not childhood friends liker... the way that shinichi is literally right there beside ran as conan but is nonetheless so so so far away and unable to do anything except watch as ran does her best to act like shinichi's constant and poorly explained absences aren't hurting her KILLS ME... like the fact that shinichi sees so clearly all of the emotional fallout from his lies to protect her... shinichi can't tell her the truth about the black org because it'll put her in even more danger so all ran knows is that shinichi is never around and seems to keep brushing her off and disappearing on her for cases and shinichi can only hope that ran's kindness and patience and love and willingness to wait for him won't wear thin before he can go back to being shinichi. like the fact that they can't reach each other even though they're SO CLOSE and even though they care so much about each other... it's just so fucked up to me!!! starcrossed...
for all of his stupid fearless genius teen boy bravado shinichi is just like so absolutely completely in love with ran and is so desperate to return to his old body so he can be with her again and goes insane when ran is in danger. and i find this really really heart touching!! and the way ran's idealism and purity of heart affects shinichi's detectiving philosophy is so sweet. and i want my girl to get her perfect fairytale romance happy ending with the boy she loves it's what she deserves!!! sometimes being in love is the most romantic thing in the world!!!
0. shinichi/haibara
the canonicity is from haibara's unrequited feelings for shinichi but i don't ship them like that at all but i also feel like i need to make it clear that shinshi is my #1 favourite boy-girl dynamic in conan. but not romantically! but it's so romantic of them to not be in love. and just because haibara is in love with shinichi doesn't mean she's in love with shinichi it's that easy. anyway not to just rehash everything i already said in my <1140shipping post> but being workmarried IS the most romantic thing in the universe. shinichi understands haibara's mind perfectly and vice versa and that's why they're such a perfect efficient effective team, but shinichi doesn't understand or try to understand haibara's heart at all on account of being a stupid teen boy whose two interests in life are ran and murder. and haibara is a master compartmentaliser so this division suits her just fine, except she DOES have delicate glass heart underneath it all so she will always be teetering between the epically compatible synergy she and shinichi have as partners vs the deep and secret tragedy of her unreturned feelings for him.
they will never be endgame and that is precisely the point to me... haibara literally wouldn't like shinichi if he wasn't completely unattainable!!! she doesn't want to be with him and she would not be happy if she were!! it's only because of the specific combination of factors which are <only person in the world who understands what she's experiencing> + <totally in love with someone else therefore will never like her back> + <failed to save her sister> that she's in love with him at all, and if any of these were not in place she wouldn't be. haibara does believe that love comes hand in hand with an appropriate amount of anguish she simply will not allow herself to be happy because she isn't wired like that. and that is NOT OK... but it is what it is )': every day i am elaborately crafting haibara's happy ending (WITH SERA) in my mind!!!
this is kind of severely a list of someone who misunderstood the assignment set by themselves but i just want to say that i think detective conan truly has the best canon het lineup in any media i've ever consumed i genuinely like all of them i will support any canon conan het for free.
