quick round of skincare product reviews 👇

some good some bad )

i don't want to make another skincare routine update post because i haven't really changed much since my last post except doing retinol every second day + FINALLY FOUND NON CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE MOISTURISER THAT WORKS FOR ME 🙏🙏🙏+ drinking 3-4L water every day + eating 2 vitamin c tablets a day. the last two i started doing this month to ward off illness but some combination of these factors is giving me the nicest clearest skin i've had for agesssss so hopefully it lasts... anyway here is a review of some recently trialled beauty products:

who could say if holiday season sales are good or bad )

happy 8 months on retinol to me! (guy who just emerged from a period of just absolutely shockingly bad skin but i think it was probably hormonal 😒 sometimes i really do feel like ok so what is even the point) anyway here is the current routine:

guy who should be working on assignment )

quick review of all the perfumes i've used before by guy who doesn't know how to describe smells. basically i love sweet candy fruity(not citrus) girly type smells and i hate everything else. and i love anything that reminds me of artificial colourings and flavourings.

i was having suchhhhh a good skin moment in jan and then i ran out of clinique moisture surge and started dying again but i have now restocked so message to all integumentary systems please survive. also i just started retinol so we'll see how that works out for me lol. i have 2 more weeks before i go back to school so i just need to be passable by then 🙏 also my feelings on many of the products i've tried/used before have changed so my views no longer represent my views

current routine:
having dehydrated oily combination sensitive skin is the devil's burden fr )
rhodochrosite: (Default)
my skin has been really decent lately because i'm basically doing facemasks every day, i think my biggest skin problem rn is dehydration so i've reduced exfoliation and increased moisturising. overall just really simplified everything down [adds like 5 additional products to routine].

current routine:

AM
  • just washing with water + gently patting TONER: son & park beauty water in with a cotton pad to remove all traces of overnight mask. i think i've been overusing the beauty water and it's drying out my skin, i think there's exfoliants in it so i'm careful not to layer it with other exfoliants
  • ACTIVE: purito galacto niacin 97 power essence - LITERALLY MAGICAL. i saw near-instant results after i started using this in skin tone and texture. it's really helped to fade discolouration and i haven't really broken out since i started using this, though idk if i can attribute that to this product specifically
  • MOISTURISER: benton aloe propolis soothing gel - just a nice light basic gel moisturiser for daytime
  • SUNSCREEN: skin aqua sarafit uv milk / skin aqua tone-up uv essence - i don't really like the sarafit milk, it feels too greasy on my skin so i prob won't repurchase, mostly trying to finish the bottle atm. i just started using the tone-up essence and i like it, it evens out redness in my skin and applies very smoothly, almost with a matte feeling. but i think it might be drying me out a bit... i have invested in anessa and will be trying that out after i finish this bottle.

PM
  • OIL CLEANSER: dhc cleansing oil - i wanted to try out a new cleanser bc i was getting bored of banila clean it zero even though it is perfect. this oil works just as well on me, but it's much harder to apply - the banila cleanser has a melty feeling but i find myself rubbing really hard at my skin with the dhc cleanser bc it like... disappears? maybe i just need to use a larger quantity of oil?
  • FOAM CLEANSER: krave beauty matcha hemp cleanser - gentle but effective cleanser it's really good, doesn't make my skin feel tight, nice clean smell, nothing but praise for this one
  • ACTIVES: cosrx bha blackhead power liquid (alternate weekdays) + krave beauty kale lalu yaha (weekends) - i've said everything that needs to be said about the cosrx bha but the krave beauty aha is reallyyyyyy good, it isn't too harsh at all and i feel like the texture of my skin has been pretty great
  • ESSENCE: pyunkang yul essence toner - a nice extra layer of hydration, sometimes if i'm bored i'll pat in like five layers. gentle enough to not break me out. consistency a little thicker than water and absorbs quite fast. not sure if i'll repurchase, though, i don't think it's directly giving me amazing results or anything
  • MASK (WEEKENDS):
    • my beauty diary aloe + my beauty diary black pearl - pretty standard masks, nicely hydrating, leaves my skin soft, good budget option
    • benton goodbye redness centella - the sheet sticks really well to my face and i think it's very soothing and hydrating one. i haven't tried it out breaking-out skin yet but i think it'll work well to fight off breakouts. will def repurchase when i run out
    • dr jart ultra jet porecting solution - not sure how i feel about this one... i feel like it kinda made my skin worse? my face felt pretty tight and red after using it but i'll try it again to figure out wtf it be doing
    • dr jart soothing hydra solution - way better and gentler than the porecting solution, but has a weird smell that i'm not super keen about
    • benton snail bee high content - idk what was up with the pack i received but the masks were sort of dry and also cut oddly, but the actual product itself is pretty nice and calming
  • EYE CREAM: mizon snail repair eye cream - no idea if this is actually doing anything, i kind of suspect eye cream to be a scam (more of a scam than skincare in general i mean) but i do want to make sure the skin around my eyes stays hydrated and non-irritated esp after i wear eyeshadow
  • SERUM: krave beauty great barrier relief - THE BEST EVER. instant overnight results in calming breakouts and reducing redness i was so shocked when i woke up the next day after testing. it's very thick for an essence, nearly like a cream in consistency, but melts into skin quickly. interesting vegetal smell
  • MOISTURISER: primera soothing sensitive essence - got bored of clinique moisture surge so i'm testing out new moisturisers and this one is really good!! it's gentle and doesn't break me out, and comes in a pump bottle not a tub, and i think it does a really good job of hydrating while controlling oil
  • MASK (WEEKDAYS)cosrx ultimate nourishing rice overnight mask - again, a magical product, my skin is always SO good and smooth and bright in the morning after i use it. doesn't leave a sticky film like other overnight masks i've used before, it just sinks right in and feels really luxe
  • LIP MASK: laneige berry / grapefruit lip sleeping mask - using the berry overnight and the grapefruit as a normal lip balm through the day, honestly don't care whether it's working or not bc it's not NOT working and it smells sooooo good

THINKING ABOUT
  • i want to try some by mi's product line bc it looks like their stuff targets the majority of my current problems re redness and texture, but i'd have to wait until my cosrx actives and my cleansers have all run out. also have seen reviews that the 30-day program is kinda a scam
  • MOISTURISER: i'm from vitamin water tree gel - i liked the sample i got in a yesstyle order so i might try the full size for summer especially, it probably won't be occlusive enough for winter
  • MOISTURISER: krave beauty oat so simple water cream - i mean, krave beauty is absolutely doing the most for me so i feel like i might as well try out the rest of their product line, i'm even shopping around for a moisturiser rn anyway... heartdrops is doing a preorder on monday and i'm not sure if i'm gonna spring for this round or the next round of preorders

quick review of some products i've tested recently:

HEIMISH ALL CLEAN BALM

this is breaking me out and i am SO mad bc it's cheaper and has prettier packaging than the banila clean it zero, but i think my skin is reacting badly to one of the essential oils in this cleanser. you can definitely smell there's herbal stuff going on in there and i was willing to put up with it but not if it's actually harming my skin. it also has a less even texture than the banila, though it does a decent job at removing makeup/sunscreen etc. really disappointed overall esp bc i thought it wasn't breaking me out for the first little while, i'm going to repurchase the banila but i'm not sure what to do with the rest of this mostly-full product

KRAVE BEAUTY MATCHA HEMP CLEANSER
gentle but works v well, does not make my skin feel stripped or tight, i can definitely feel the hydration. i like this one a lot. also i like the scent, kinda like oats + matcha? haven't used this one in a while bc i didn't want to stress my skin with too many new products but i might start again bc i don't think my usual hada labo cleanser is strong enough to get rid of all of the heimish balm during second cleanse

LANEIGE CREAM SKIN REFINER
kind of a pain to apply bc it's like a moisturiser but in liquid toner consistency, i use it in the mornings if i'm not going out right away. not entirely sure if it's doing anything but it doesn't seem to be actively doing anything bad either so eh. had a weird smell a little bit like drinkable yoghurt you know the kids stuff that comes in a tube? but either i got used to it or the smell wore off?

BELIF AQUA BOMB SLEEPING MASK
well it definitely leaves my skin very soft in the morning it's just a pain to apply. but i think it's a nice product. no remarkable scent, just smells sort of fresh which is good bc it means it doesn't have like unnecessary perfume ingredients but also bad bc skincare smell good slap product on face is a big reason i'm into skincare in the first place

INNISFREE GREEN TEA MOISTURISING PRODUCT RANGE
got a bunch of samples of their serum/eye cream/moisturiser/mask as part of the membership welcome gift and like... it works? i didn't have any adverse reactions, it left my skin nice and soft in the morning. not anything amazing enough for me to change up my routine but the products themselves are fine

I'M FROM VITAMIN WATER TREE GEL
got this as a free sample in a yesstyle order, i liked it and i think it calmed my breakout. good light moisturiser. it's just that it isn't clinique moisture surge if you know what i mean...

BENTON ALOE SOOTHING GEL
also got this as a free sample in a yesstyle order, it's just a nice soothing cooling aloe moisturiser, good for summer but again its main crime is not being clinique moisture surge

INNISFREE VIVID COTTON INK #6
i think this is the perfect mlbb colour and i love the application (the doe foot applicator is shaped rly well) and consistency and wear (sticks around through multiple meals) it's just that it does notttt dry down and transfers like crazy. which seems to be a me problem judging by online reviews? idk where i'm going wrong tho. but it is really nice

INNISFREE SKINNY BROW MASCARA (CLEAR)
i like this product SO much it makes me feel like i've done my brows when in reality i have done jack shit <3 thin wand makes application super easy

DIOR ADDICT STELLAR SHINE
birthday gift from jolin LOL it's a sheer sparkly pale pink lipstick, closer to a gloss? the colour is very light i usually layer it over lip tint. doesn't dry my lips out so that's good. lasts VERY long, will persist through beverages / meals even if they are greasy / my bad lip biting/licking habits. probably the single most $ makeup item i own but i can understand why it really is a good quality lip product

ETUDE HOUSE BLING BLING EYE STICK
cream eyeshadow pencil, i have a like bronze-gold colour, it applies very smoothly and the colour intensity is buildable and i don't remember it creasing much so it's just nice low effort shimmer
rhodochrosite: (Default)
the base structure of my routine hasn't changed but i'm using a few new products now and i think there's been a definite improvement in the quality of my skin hehe... have yet to try krave beauty aha or laneige cream skin refiner but SOON...

here is what my routine looks like right now!

AM:
  • i'm gonna be real with you lately i've been too lazy to actually cleanse in the mornings, i just wash my face with water most of the time
  • VITAMIN C: melano cc anti-spot essence - i use this as a spot treatment on my forehead + pat in a few drops around the rest of my face while my skin is slightly damp. my skin has seriously gotten A LOT better since i started regularly applying vitamin c, much brighter as well i think?
  • ESSENCE: cosrx advanced snail 96 mucin power essence - if my face feels super dry i'll apply a layer of this after vitamin c, but my sunscreen has a moisturising effect so i usually don't bother. i think this works really nicely as a light hydrating layer esp going into summer, i feel like moisturiser + sunscreen will just be too oily for my skin
  • SUNSCREEN: skin aqua UV super moisture milk sunscreen - i was starting to feel worried about the biore sunscreen's alcohol content so i've started using this one and i LOVE it, the milk absorbs more evenly and quickly than biore's gel formula and it doesn't have the strong alcohol smell, and my skin feels really nice and soft afterwards. honestly one of my fave products atm!!
  • LIP BALM: DHC medicate lip cream - this is not a cream it's like a hard balm, has a very slight gloss? the packaging is super cute, like a bullet lipstick. it's really easy to apply and i think it's a super solid lip balm lol it does its job well. putting a layer underneath lipstick/lip tint in the morning makes lip makeup look better and last longer!!
PM:
  • OIL CLEANSER: banila clean it zero cleansing balm - no change except i've finally switched over to the new formula (my last tub was a 1.5x sized one and lasted me like 2 years), it works just as well as the old formula and the spatula is a lot sturdier haha still love this one!!
  • FOAM CLEANSER: hada labo foaming wash - perfectly serviceable, very gentle as i keep saying, tbh the problem now is that i'm BORED i want a more exciting second cleanser x__x might see if i can get my hands on the krave beauty matcha hemp cleanser during the 0.5 seconds it's ever in stock on heartdrops
  • TONER: son & park beauty water - i've only recently integrated this into my routine but in general my skin's gotten a lot better so i'd say that's a positive sign. it's a little harder to apply than my old tfs toner bc it dries very quickly once it's out of the bottle, and it has this like. medicinal smell? almost like bark? i don't mind it though and i think it's doing good things for my skin so i'll prob repurchase in a bigger size when this bottle runs out
  • ACTIVES: cosrx bha blackhead power liquid (weekdays) + cosrx aha 7 whitehead power liquid (weekends)loves of my life i will never doubt you again truly you don't know what you have until you lose it
  • ESSENCE: cosrx advanced snail 96 mucin power essence - i use this on my face excluding my forehead for an extra layer of hydration after acids, i thinkkkk it's doing good things for my skin texture
  • MOISTURISER: clinique moisture surge 72 hr hydrator - legiterally the best moisturiser in the universe i cannot overstate how much this saved my LIFE
  • LIP MASK: laneige berry lip mask - i apply just before going to bed i love luxury. i think repeated use has def had a longer term effect on my lips they're much softer than usual
THINKING ABOUT:
  • heimish all clean balm - this is cheaper and allegedly better than the banila cleansing balm bc it has more natural ingredients or something... i'm a little bit wary of the presence of coconut oil tho, i don't think my sensitive skin will react well so i will probably stick to the banila one
  • cosrx one step original clear face pad - my irl who has amazing skin (the one who recced s&p beauty water to me) also recced this, she said she uses it in the morning as a quick way to cleanse and i think liah yoo (founder of krave beauty) has mentioned doing this before as well... i might buy a tub just bc i'm worried that washing with water isn't cleansing my face enough in the mornings bc i apply product afterwards lol
rhodochrosite: (Default)
my skin has recovered like 80% from w/e it was going through the past few weeks except that my skin texture is currently the worst it's ever been and i'm sooo mad... give me back my perfect smooth cheeks wtf. also i need to clear cosrx bha's name, i said in my last post i didn't feel like it was doing anything but i just started using chemical exfoliants again and holyyyy fuck the difference bha made to my skin literally overnight, my skin was so much smoother and most of the red bumps on my cheeks were gone and basically the breakouts on my cheeks (i never usually break out on my cheeks!!) have pretty much disappeared. THANK YOU COSRX

anyway some thoughts on skincare and makeup products i've tried out recently:

HADA LABO FOAMING WASH
it's good! have graduated from patch testing to regular use, it's lovely and gentle and doesn't dry me out and i think either my oil cleanser is hard carrying or its cleansing ability is fine, so none of my original concerns ended up coming true, thankfully

COSRX HONEY CERAMIDE CREAM
VERY thick and occlusive, nice honey scent, it barely absorbed into my skin and just sat on top like a mask. unfortunately i think i'm allergic? my skin got WORSE after i used it (i didn't patch test bc i was kinda desperate and just slathered it all over my face) and i legit woke up in the middle of the night trying to scratch my face off :/ but idk if that was just the skin problem or directly bc of the product. i'll patch test again once my skin goes fully back to normal and if i really am allergic then... idk. ETA 190808 i'm not actually allergic thank god but i don't have much use for this cream atm bc the clinique one is so good

COSRX ADVANCED SNAIL 96 MUCIN POWER ESSENCE
nice and lightweight, i use this as an extra layer of hydration on my cheeks after exfoliating. not much else to say it's a decent product as with most cosrx stuff i've tried

CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE 72 HR HYDRATOR
literally magical. cured my skin disease. i haven't tried it on my tzone yet but i have faith that it will not break me out i'm literally in love this is the best moisturiser i've ever used 10/10 wish i could afford this on a regular basis wtfffff. nothing else to say it's just really good

LANEIGE BERRY LIP MASK
smells delicious!! really sweet candy-like scent, feels very luxurious when you put it on. i love that the spatula comes in its own little envelope it's so fancy... my lips are definitely softer in the morning but i don't know that the money i spent on this was necessarily warranted dflkdfgldkfk just wanted the experience

NYX THAT'S THE POINT HELLA FINE
bought this bc it was cheap and i needed an eyeliner to last me until my kate one came in and i mean i guess it works but it's kinda smudgy and hard to get fine lines out of even though it's meant to have a fine tip for precision, ig it would have been fine to tide me over until then but really i should have waited ONE DAY and then i would have found the isehan eyeliner so basically i just have to force myself to alternate so i don't waste my money smfh. it's a nice dark black at least

ISEHAN KISS ME HEROINE EYELINER
i already bought the nyx eyeliner but i saw this in md ranking and was like fuck it i'll get this too... it's so thin and precise!! i love this one T__T it doesn't last as long as my stila one did and also isn't quite as dark but it's still pretty good, doesn't smudge as badly as the nyx one. emphasing that it's REALLY thin and gives you so much control over lines, very good for fine wings which i like to do

NYX MATTE LIP CREAM
my last matte nude liquid lipstick was the nyx lip lingerie which was pretty good but it's like 2 years old so i was like ehhh better get a new one... thought i'd try this one out, i'm not totally sure what it is? it's not as thick or pigmented as a liquid lipstick, it really does apply like a cream... the problem is that it doesn't dry down at all unlike a liquid lipstick so it smudges like crasy. i like layering clear lip gloss over matte lipstick and it's really hard to do that with this product... i think i'll have to go back to a regular liquid lipstick

KATE RARE FIT GEL PENCIL
just got this yesterday and i'm not gonna lie i have no fucking idea how to use it, it took me like 10 minutes to figure out you have to twist the barrel to push the pencil part out and also that it isn't retractable (discovered this when i accidentally broke off like a good half centimetre of the tip). i'm not sure how to get it to a finer tip??? i need a thinner line... it does have incredible staying power tho, doesn't smudge at all and it's a very dark black and applies super smoothly and gently, i just can't draw wings properly hhhhh

rhodochrosite: (Default)
ggghghghhgh i dont know why my skin has been SO BAD since i came back from gc not even breaking out yet just sooo dry and tight and bumpy which is so weird since usually i have the opposite problem, oily/combination/sensitive skin type ~__~ also ongoing problem with my lips that i still haven't figured out how to fix. basically my entire face stings and im sooo miserable

anyway the point of this post was to record my skincare routine + thoughts on products so i can track progress...

AM:
  • FOAM CLEANSER: the face shop chia seed cleanser - im trying to phase this out of my routine, it doesnt actively break me out but i think its way too harsh on my skin and i really dont like it T_T i only got it bc i couldnt afford/source better cleansers at the time. i dont trust products that foam too easily and in general i think tfs skincare is not great
  • VITAMIN C: melano cc anti-spot essence - just started using this, its a very popular serum according to my research so i hope its not breaking me out lmfaoo i havent noticed any change in my skin yet but its early days yet. i really like the applicator, its so easy to control how much im squeezing out and it protects the product from exposure to air
  • MOISTURISER: cosrx advanced snail all in one cream - pretty decent moisturiser, usually hydrating enough just not lately T__T im almost done with this tub so im not sure whether to get a refill or try a new moisturiser but at least i know this one definitely doesnt break me out
  • SUNSCREEN: biore uv aqua rich watery essence - really like this, its not greasy or oily at all but every time i buy a new tube biores revamped the formulation so idk... i think my skin agrees the most with the 2019 formula which is lucky, plus it doesnt have the weird smell the 2017 formula did
PM:
  • OIL CLEANSER: banila clean it zero cleansing balm - LOVE this, i love that its solid so it transports easily and only melts into an oil once you apply it to your face... gentle but thorough. i do wonder if this is the product thats drying me out tho? im often too lazy to double cleanse but ive been going ham on the oil cleanser for the past month so maybe its a delayed reaction... x__x i would be so sad i rly love this product
  • FOAM CLEANSER: the face shop chia seed cleanser
  • TONER: the face shop rice ceramide toner - its ok i guess... again i dont think tfs skincare products are very good, i dont really think this is doing anything for my skin but i dont want to put acids directly onto double cleansed skin. im looking for a new hydrating toner (when will heartdrops restock son & park beauty water in the 50ml size so i can test it!!) but i might just end up dropping this step from my routine
  • ACTIVES: i use bha on weekdays + aha on weekends. i know thats quite often but my skin has been fine with it until this past week... tbh i dont know if theyre doing a lot for my skin, i do notice my skin gets worse when im on holidays and dont bother packing actives but theres a lot of other variables there to consider
    • cosrx bha blackhead power liquid - no real thoughts but i feel like this is more effective at combating breakouts than the aha
    • cosrx aha 7 whitehead power liquid - no real thoughts either im just trying to use up the bottles and im too scared to drop them from my routine in case my skin dramatically worsens
  • MASK: various the face shop masks - once every week or so. i bought a bunch of these bc the sales assistant was pretty and talked me into it lmao the avocado one is pretty hydrating. i think the tea tree one doesnt agree with my skin... when im done with these ill probably just go back to lush face masks, i think theyre much better for my skin
  • MOISTURISER: cosrx advanced snail all in one cream
  • SPOT TREATMENT: for breakouts
    • cosrx acne pimple master patch - LOVE THIS love hydrocolloid bandages... apply over open pimple and it basically excavates it... leaves a little bit of a red mark (scar?) behind but it fades over time + with application of aha lol
    • lush grease lightning - for pimples that havent come to a head yet... really nice soothing cooling effect
CURRENTLY PATCH TESTING:
  • FOAM CLEANSER: hada labo gokujyun super hyaluronic acid foaming wash - patch testing this on my forehead and so far im not actively breaking out which is a good sign i guess, its just that my entire face has such bad skin quality rn i cant really tell but this is apparently one of the safest most gentle cleansers on the market. tbh my concern is that it doesnt give me that 'clean' feeling, it might be TOO gentle and not cleansing enough for me x__x
TESTING SOON:
  • SERUM: cosrx advanced snail 96 mucin power essence - really hopeful about this one, flare said it dramatically improved the texture of her skin and the cream works on me so fingers crossed this will hydrate my skin nicely
  • MOISTURISER: cosrx honey ceramide full moisture cream - heard this is thicker + more occlusive and hydrating than the snail cream im using rn so hopefully it will give my skin the hydration it needs rn
  • TONER/SERUM/MOISTURISER: laneige cream skin refiner - got this on a whim for when my skin is too oily for a heavy cream/gel moisturiser or maybe for morning routine. alternatively i might replace my tfs toner with this. ofc dependent on whether it breaks me out
  • LIP MASK: laneige lip sleeping mask - kind of extra but like four people have said this is good so im going to get it next time im at sephora or beautyworks cosmetica or something
  • ACTIVE: krave beauty kale lalu yAHA - god this was $$$... got suckered in by the hype even tho i still have ~30% of my cosrx aha left but im really excited about this, apparently its gentle and helps clear breakouts and is really good for sensitive skin so im hopeful it works on me!!
THINKING ABOUT:
  • OIL CLEANSER: innisfree green tea cleansing water - im curious about micellar water and id like to try but my current oil cleanser works so well i dont really have any justification to do so
  • FOAM CLEANSER: cosrx low ph good morning cleanser - i generally trust cosrxs products but their salycic acid cleanser broke me out (it was SOOO drying) so im a little bit scared to try
  • FOAM CLEANSER: krave beauty matcha hemp hydrating cleanser - i am not immune to hype!!!
  • SERUM: krave beauty great barrier relief - i am not immune to hype x2!!!!
  • TONER: son & park beauty water - recced by an irl who has amazing skin
  • ACTIVE: the ordinary - i dont even know where to start since to has so many products id have to do more research but im kind of eye emoji...

even if i believed in fate

it would only be about meeting you
